At the kitchen dining table, silence reigns for a full minute. Every single gaze, including Blair—ordered out of her room by Dom—is aimed right at me.

“You want to do what?” Chloe breathes.

I take a sip of my cold coffee. Anything to hide the anxiety churning in my gut. “It’s the only way they’ll approach. They’ll see my human side as too much of a threat.”

“Because you stabbed one of them in the heart,” Jones says as if he still can’t believe it. Surprising, considering he and Aly were the ones to stuff the enforcer's body in the trunk of their car while Chloe distracted the sheriff.

I nod. “Exactly.”

“But your wolf is submissive,” Bethany adds.

As if I don’t need a reminder. My wolf hasn’t stopped cowering since I first suggested the idea to her early this morning.

“She is,” I agree.

Silence.

Rose clears her throat. “And you want to—”

“I don’t want to do anything,” I interrupt. “What I need to do is end this enforcer threat before they hit us when we’re least expecting it. And then there’s the sheriff.”

“What about the sheriff?” Chloe asks, eyebrows drawn as she sits up in her chair. “Because I’m sure I convinced him that—”

“You convinced him for now,” I correct her. “But he still hasn’t seen Galen, which means he could turn up any minute and start asking questions. What if he comes to investigate and one of the enforcers rips out his throat? What would happen when we suddenly have a dead sheriff in the front yard? Are we going to have the FBI sniffing around?”

Chloe’s face whitens, and her hands tighten around her mug. “What?”

“Sierra has a point,” Nick agrees. “If this drags on any longer, things could get messy.”

“So we send a submissive wolf out there alone to face off against the same enforcers who took Galen?” Blair’s tone is sharp with anger.

All eyes swing her way, and I doubt mine are the only ones wide with surprise.

Rose glares down the table at her. “And whose fault was that?”

The two women stare each other down.

“I didn’t want that to happen,” Blair finally says. From her slumped shoulders and the tension around her eyes, it’s clear she got about as much sleep as I did last night. Which is to say, none at all. “I thought I could—”

“Well, you thought wrong. We’re a pack, Blair. You should have said something. Maybe the enforcers still would have ambushed Galen, but maybe they wouldn’t have, ‘cause we’d have figured out what these asses wanted and gotten them first.” Rose snaps. “Instead, you keep a secret that nearly got Galen killed after he gave us all a home.”

Tension crackles in the room.

Without a word, Blair stands from the table, face expressionless. She turns around and stalks out of the kitchen and up the stairs. No one calls out to her, and no one goes after her because Blair didn’t just betray Galen. She betrayed the pack.

How does a pack recover from that?

I shake my head. That’s a problem for another day.
